How to Create a Home Library Out of a Spare Room

With larger homes there are always issues with what to do with the spare rooms.  The odds are that you’ll never have enough company to fill them all up so why not turn one of the spare rooms into a home library?  All the fashionable and luxury home have a library that tells a story about their taste in literature.  Even if you are not fond of reading, books are a great investment and having signed first editions in your collection is very impressive.  Many first editions appreciate with age and while the stock market may drop, there is always a need for investments that are sound.  The following are some ideas to help you create a home library out of a spare room.

Shelving

When considering your wall unit design, make sure that you leave on wall free from shelving for a comfortable couch or chairs to read on.  One thing to consider is having the shelves built directly into the frame of the room.  This allows for more area in the room and a sturdy foundation for the shelves as they are created by using the studs and braces for the walls.  You will need to call an interior decorator to help you choose the perfect wood grain and to bring in a contractor for you to build the shelving.  This is not a project you want to leave to amateurs or to someone you don’t trust and your designer has many different contractors who will complete the project on time and within budget.

Couch or Reading Chairs?

One thing that many people have a problem deciding on for their library is whether they should use a couch or chairs for the reading areas.  If you plan on doubling the room as a guest room if you ever do need extra space then a couch with a hideaway bed is always a great option.  If the room is large enough to support it, you can also have two reading chairs with a table and lamp in a different corner of the room.  If you don’t need to use the room for guests then choose some comfortable and classic reading chairs, again with tables for reading lamps.  Luxury residential interior design can be either modern or classic so choose the furniture to match your taste.

What Type of Flooring is Appropriate

If you want a more contemporary design for the room then you need to hire a contemporary interior designer to come up with the appropriate flooring type.  Many in the industry feel that a carpeted floor is much better than hard wood or tile as it protects the books if they were ever to fall off the shelves.  If you are collecting first editions then you need to be careful with them.  Breaking the spine or bending pages can degrade the value of the book.  Carpeting is much gentler on books than hard flooring is so this is typically the type that is installed in a library.

If you have a spare room in your home that you don’t know what to do with then consider turning it into a library.  You can invest in first editions and you can still have room for overnight guests when needed.
