Tips for Converting Your Garage into a Living Space

If you plan on converting your garage into additional living space, you will find that there are quite a few things to consider. You cannot just wave a magic wand and the garage suddenly be in livable condition. You must sit down and think about a few things before you do transform your garage space.

Below, we will go over some tips to help you when it comes time to convert your garage into a beautiful, luxurious living space.

1. What about the Floors?

You probably do not want to walk around on concrete all of the time, so you need to consider all of your options. Since your garage is an enclosed portion of your home, you can choose from any indoor flooring options including linoleum, tile, hardwood, and carpeting.

2. Will You Be Installing a Ceiling?

Another consideration is whether or not you will be installing a ceiling. If you plan to have air conditioning or lighting, you may need to think about installing one so that you can add insulation and have support for your hanging fixtures.

3. Let the Light Shine In

You cannot forget about light when you are converting your garage area. If you do not have adequate lighting, you will find it is hard to see. You can hang lighting fixtures from the ceiling or you can choose to utilize natural lighting by installing windows.

4. How Will You Stay Cold and Warm?

Living in your garage will not be easy if you do not have the proper items in place. For instance, if you want to keep the space warm in the winter and cool in the summer, you need to have the garage area insulated.

Professional insulation is the best way to go and you need to think about the garage door as well. Will you be keeping it or replacing it with a concrete wall?

In addition, you need to think about whether you will have an air conditioning unit placed in the window or if you will have your central heating and air flow into the new living space. If you do want your central heating and AC to run into the garage space, you will have to have additional duct work put in.

If you are working to convert your garage into a luxurious living space, you need to start with the tips and considerations above. To make the space the best it can be, you need to start with the basics and have a solid idea in mind.
