Create a Home Interior Design That Will Last

designelements2In the past, many home interior designs were created for the present. In other words, homeowners looked at what would suit their needs at that particular time but they didn’t think about what they would be doing four or five years down the road. Today, the opposite is true. Interior designers and homeowners understand the need to look to the future when designing their homes.

Your home is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make, so you need a design that will accommodate your needs now and in the future. For example, a two-bedroom house may seem like plenty of space for a newly married couple with no kids. However, if you plan to have two or more children in the future, you’ll quickly outgrow that cozy two-bedroom home. When this happens, you’ll have to either add on to the home or move to a bigger one.

Below are a few more important details to consider when creating a home interior design that will last for many years.

Choose the Right Floor Plan

Your floor plan or layout of the home is very important so look at your different options and choose one that would suit your future needs as well as your current ones. An open floor plan is usually a great option because it helps to utilize the most space and creates an open view between your living room, dining room or kitchen. It also gives you room to make changes as needed.

Instead of designing a narrow hall leading from outside into the main room, wide entranceways are much easier to access as your family grows. They also help to create a more welcoming environment. When creating your floor plan pay close attention to the layout of the bedrooms and consider privacy issues. If you prefer as much privacy as possible, you may want your master bedroom on the opposite side of the home instead of right next to the regular bedrooms.

The placement of the bathrooms is also important. Do you want a master bathroom connected to your bedroom? This is a convenient and great idea but make sure you include a second full bathroom in the main area of your home not just a half bath. If you have overnight guests, they’ll need somewhere to shower and freshen up without having to go through your bedroom. You don’t want your kids running through your bedroom every night either.

Incorporate Both Comfort and Style into Your Decor

Everyone wants a stylish home, especially if you like to entertain guests but don’t just focus on style alone. Comfort is just as important as style, especially when you’re thinking long-term. When you come home from a long day at work, you need a place that is comfortable to sit back and relax for awhile.

If that designer sofa that looks so great in your living room is so uncomfortable that you never sit on it, then it’s a waste of space. This is your home where you have control over everything that goes into it, so take the time to find comfortable furniture that sits as good as it looks. As time goes by, you’ll be thankful you did.

When creating a home interior design think of your plans for the future. It will help you come up with a floor plan that will suit your needs now and later and don’t forget to incorporate both comfort as well as style into the design.
