Becoming an interior designer is an exciting career that allows you to be creative and meet all types of interesting people but it can also be very demanding. Designing residential or commercial property requires dedication, proper training and a real desire to be a designer. Without these qualities, you won’t be able to meet the demands these professionals deal with every day.
Organizing, coordinating and planning skills are needed in order to have a successful designing career. You’ll be in charge of handling a variety of jobs all at once and all with tight deadlines. Designers must be organized and have the ability to coordinate and plan every detail of the project in order to meet deadlines with complete efficiency. Below are a few more qualities you’ll need to have a successful interior design career.
Being an interior designer requires excellent leadership skills. You have to take charge and get the job done. You are the one that will be working with the contractors, suppliers and other professionals and it’s your responsibility to make sure they’re doing their jobs correctly. In addition to this responsibility, you’ll also deal directly with the clients to keep them informed of the progress and to make sure the project is going according to their expectation.
Knowing your limitations is also necessary because you must know when to ask for assistance or when to turn down a job because it’s more than you can handle alone. Some designers can work on two or three projects simultaneously while others are better off only taking one job at a time. It really depends on the size of the job and how much resources you have.
Interior designers rely on their verbal and listening skills to communication efficiently with clients and other professionals needed to complete a project. You have to listen carefully to what the client wants so you can create the perfect design. You also need lots of patience and a very persuasive nature to help clients make the best decisions and to work efficiently with other professionals to achieve the results you were hired to do.
Unfortunately, there will also be times that you’ll need to explain to clients that the wonderful design ideas they have, won’t work. The key is to help the client understand why it won’t work and how to make acceptable changes, all while maintaining a friendly and pleasant relationship with the client.
To be a top interior designer, you have to be dedicated to providing the very best service possible. To do this, you must be self-disciplined and be willing to put in the time and effort to acquire the education you need to obtain your license and to be one of the best. Knowing and understanding scale, perspective, balance and proportions are necessary to do your job correctly. You must also be familiar with and understand how to use CAD software and similar programs along with all local, state and federal laws associated with interior design.
