Your bathroom deserves a lot of attention especially when creating the design. Not only is it the most used room in the home but you also want to make a good impression when you have visitors. The size of the bathroom is not as important as functionality and comfort. Using the space you do have efficiently is the secret to creating the best design but that’s not always easy to do.
If you don’t have interior design experience, it’s easy to fall victim to some of the common bathroom design mistakes made by others. Below are three major mistakes you need to avoid.
Since bathrooms are a private area of the home, many people don’t think about needing windows but not allowing the natural light to shine in creates a dark, damp environment. It will feel uncomfortable and it can even make it difficult to keep clean since that’s the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. Windows let in light but they’re also a part of your ventilation system since you can open them up and allow the fresh air to blow in when weather permits.
Adding at least one large window will brighten up your bathroom and help you create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Using proper window coverings such as blinds or curtains will ensure privacy when you need it, so you don’t have to worry about that. If for some reason adding a window to your bathroom is not practical, you can always consider adding a skylight.
If you have a large bathroom, you don’t have to worry too much about overcrowding but not everyone has that luxury. In addition, extra bathrooms tend to be small so where you place the tub, toilet and sink is very important. If you have everything crowded on top of each other, it can be very uncomfortable and less functional. Therefore, you have to make the most out of the space you have when creating your design.
This is one area where our experience and design knowledge can greatly benefit you. We can offer tips and suggestions you may not have thought of for your bathroom interior design. For example, instead of installing a sink with a cabinet consider a pedestal sink or install a shower instead of a bathtub. Both options will create a fully functional bathroom while saving space and making the room feel larger. We also have some excellent ideas for creating storage space to ensure you have everything you need within reach.
The location of your bathroom is very important. Have you ever visited someone and discovered the bathroom was adjacent to the living room or kitchen? It can make you feel very uncomfortable because you know how sound can travel. The bathrooms should always be located where you cannot see into the room from the kitchen, living room or dining room. Imagine sitting down to dinner with your family and your view is the bathroom toilet. That’s not a very appetizing sight.
If you need to place the bathroom adjacent to one of these rooms, you can always place a divider wall between the doorway and the adjoining room to create more privacy. Our expert designers have many other great ideas to share. Just give us a call when you’re ready to start your project.
